Shark Attack off Fishhoek Beach
A British man has lost both legs after he was attacked by a great white shark whilst swimming near Fishhoek earlier today.
Shark attacks are a constant threat in the False bay area and it is reported that the 42 year old, believed to be from Plumstead, near London, ignored the shark alerts and other efforts to divert swimmers, and entered the water. 90 minutes earlier, a great white was seen in the bay and Shark Spotters activated the alert, the alarm was sounded raising the black 'no-swim' flags and doing patrols to warn people. But sadly this was not enough.
Spokesman Craig Lambinon said: "On arrival, a 42-year-old man was found on the shore suffering complete amputation of his right leg, above the knee, and partial amputation of his left leg, below the knee. "The man was conscious when paramedics attended to him on the beach, but was sedated on-scene by paramedics in their efforts to stabilise the patient," he added.
