White Shark Diving in Gansbaai (Self Drive)

White Shark Diving in Gansbaai

Tour Overview

The Great White Shark diving capital of the world is often cited as Gansbaai which is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, two hours drive from Cape Town.  This small fishing town is the gateway to exploring the watery habitat of the great white; also known as 'Shark Alley'.

The local topography and environmental conditions combined with an abundant seal population make this location one of the few where sharks can be observed in their natural habitat, by taking a single-day tour.

There are a limited amount of operator permits issued for this unique experience, which combined with the weather dependency mean that seats are a rare commodity, especially in peak season so booking is essential.

Detailed Description

Your great adventure begins when we meet you in Gansbaai, a small fishing town about a two hour drive along the coast. We meet at the crew house in the nearby harbour of Kleinbaai where you will enjoy some breakfast and receive a safety and information briefing that will tell you more about your trip.

On board the boat you will find complimentary snacks and beverages as well as all the dive equipment you will need for your exciting shark encounter. The knowledgable shark crew will ensure that your experience both on board and in the water is a memorable one, pointing out the sights, educating you about sharks, and generally making sure you are comfortable. They are familiar with the behaviour of sharks when hunting in this area and are skilled at finding suitable dive spots where shark activity may occur.

Diving takes place on a rotational basis and on good diving days it is possible for each diver to take more than one dive. Duration of each dive depends on the diver and the activity of the sharks, but could be up to half an hour per dive. Sharks are surface feeders, so be sure to make the most of the view from the deck for spectacular photographic opportunities.

Your sail back to the harbour will take in the local scenery, don't forget it gets cold after being in the water so don't forget a warm jacket.

Lunch is served upon return during which you will have an opportunity to view the video footage of the day, reliving the adventure.

Considerations

June to November is Whale watching season

Winter weather is changable, be as flexible with dates if possible.

Remember that Great white sharks are wild animals and that to see one is a privilege and a rare experience.

We recommend you take motion sickness tablets, as sea-sickness is common.
