Lodge 96

Oudtshoorn is a traditional Afrikaaner town packed with character and plenty to keep you amused. Most famous for it's Ostrich industry, you can visit any of the local ostrich farms to see these strange birds, pet them, watch them race and even ride them! Also in the area is the world famous Cango Caves, where tours operate daily into the depths of the local mountains with different tour-levels catering for even the most light-loving individual. You can also stroke White Tigers or Cheetahs, dive with 4m crocodiles or just kick back and enjoy some of the local wine farms.

The interesting town centre is within walking distance of Lodge 96; be sure to visit the Museum which presents the extensive ostrich farming industry in South Africa. You will find lot's of quirky shops and eateries to tempt you and the local hospitality is fantastic, complimented by the local hand-made produce such as Belgian chocolate and delicious goat’s milk cheeses.

Lodge 96 which is a brand new venue (think new mattresses!) for Backpackers, is a small hostel (think personal service)with ample secure parking and immaculate sleeping accommodation. The dorms sleep only 8 people at a time and have their own private bathrooms but for those seeking a little more privacy; luxury accommodation is available in the double bedrooms each of which as an en-suite bathroom. This little hostel is owner run and provides intimate service, great character and in season, fresh fruit (figs, grapes, apricots, peaches, plums, granadillas - I mean really, where else?) straight from the trees in the surrounding gardens; which also houses a swimming pool.

Owner, Matt (who lives on site) will ensure that you have everything you need and is a minefield of information. So be sure to ask him if you are interested in experiencing quad biking, abseiling, paintballing or any other adventure activity. He can arrange visits to the local attractions but also, more unusual and exclusive excursions such as kayaking on a gorgeous dam nestled against the Swartberg mountains. The local terrain has wonderful hiking and mountain biking trails, stunning waterfall picnic spots as well as natural thermal baths and Oudtshoorn averages 333 days sunshine a year, making it ideal for outdoor activities. All of this makes Lodge 96 an ideal stopover for your Shark Cage Dive as it is easily accesible to Gansbai and a wonderful diversion.
