The anticipation builds slowly. A few days before you’re set to take on one of the most exhilarating adventures of your life, you begin to feel it. Shark Cage Diving sounded like a good idea when it was all just talk.
The little tingly feeling at the back of your neck intensifies. You’re feeling a little jumpy but you try and play it off. You tell yourself it’s all going to be perfectly fine. The little voice at the back of your head urges you to watch every shark film, even the bad ones. The regret is bitter. Time ticks by, and the day of your booking approaches. There’s a constant wrestle in your mind between fear and excitement. The night before, you find yourself walking a tightrope between sleep and restlessness. Images of the 20 rows of razor sharp teeth play before your eyes as you feel your bed slowly rocking to the rhythm of the ocean.
D-day arrives. Shark Zone’s transport services arrive at your doorstep, ready to deliver you at the gates of Shark Alley, a little spot in the Indian Ocean containing the world’s densest Great White shark population. The drone of the Jaws theme music plays on loop in your ear. Your arrival at the little town of Gansbaai is met with a warm and energetic welcome from the Shark Zone team, as well as the other participants taking on the daunting affair of coming face to face with the guardians of Shark Alley. Their nervousness makes you feel a little better about yourself but the super-important safety briefing puts you at ease as you realise that these guys know exactly what they’re doing.
And you’re off. A little walk to Kleinbaai Harbour, a hop into the boat, and away we go. This is the moment. You kit up and slip steadily into the cage. You’re about to stare into the eyes of one of the ocean’s deadliest creatures, it’s razor sharp teeth inches away from your flesh. Nothing can truly prepare you for it. The water stirs gently. The crewmen call to give the signal that the first shark has been spotted. This is the moment that will change your life forever. There’s no turning back now.
