Now that you have a general idea of the timeline you’ll be following throughout the day, it’s time to get a little more detail about the dive.
After the boat ride south of the Cape Peninsula, when the crew have found the blue water, they will begin to chum the water to attract the Blue and Mako sharks. While you are waiting for them to come out and play, the crew will give you a safety briefing – advising you how best to interact with the sharks. When the first sharks arrive it’s time to slip into the water for a day of snorkelling or scuba diving amongst these incredible creatures, under the watchful eye of SharkZone safety divers.
Mako sharks are thought to be the fastest of all shark species, capable of extreme bursts of speed up to 35km per hour! They are also famed for making spectacular leaps up to 5m out of the water. Their upper bodies are a brilliant metallic blue, while their undersides are snow-white. Blue sharks, on the other hand, are large indigo-coloured sharks. With a sleep, tapered body, they are graceful swimmer and highly curious animals.
All in all, the trip will allow you to get up close and personal with these beautiful sharks, experiencing their brilliance in a freedom that cage-diving doesn’t permit. As the water is clear and warm, there are fantastic filming and photographic opportunities, so don’t forget to bring your cameras.
Each Mako scuba diving trip off the coast of Cape Town lasts approximately 5 hours, and during this time you will get up close and personal with Mako and Blue sharks, getting the chance to observe them in their natural habitat. Not to worry, there are safety divers in the water at all times, watching over the group. Safety is, and always has been, a priority for SharkZone.
- 06:15 – In an early start is in order for all divers, who are to meet up in Simonstown before hopping on the board, which is docked in the Simon’s Town harbour and embarking on this incredible day-long adventure.
- 06:30 – All aboard! Clients hop onto the boat and depart for Cape Point, about 40 km’s south of the Cape Peninsula. On the way to the dive spot, you will be treated to breathtaking, expansive view of the Cape Peninsula shoreline.
- 08:30 – …or thereabout will see your arrival at the dive spot. Now the fun really begins! Crew chum the water, you wait for the sharks to turn and then slip into the water and experience the thrill of unhindered shark scuba diving in Cape Town.
- 16:00 – Return back to the Simon’s Town Harbour and share your pictures and stories with your fellow divers, friends and family.
What to bring:
- Sun block and hat.
- Comfortable shoes.
- Swim wear and towel.
- Sea sickness tablets.
- Warm jacket.
- Camera!

- R3000 per person (excluding dive kit).
